Be A Volunteer

We need you.

Can you volunteer a few hours each week?

Dear reader, once you have looked at our website and gotten a feel for the work we do, would you please consider donating a few hours per week to our organisation. It does not matter what your nationality is or what experience you may have of this type of work, all we ask is that you have a willingness to assist other people who may be in a difficult position through no fault of their own. Many problems can be solved by a friendly piece of advice or just an ear for a short while. It matters not where you live, just contact us if you are willing to help and we will respond.

We are particularly interested to hear from you if you speak any languages besides Polish or English (Lithuanian, Bulgarian, Romanian etc.)

Never forget this, the knowledge you hold about your local community, town or city could be invaluable to some other person. If you are willing to help then please complete the Volunteer Form below and click on send. Success of our charity largely owes to a team of dedicated, passionate volunteers whom we train and support to support our beneficiaries.

Our volunteers can count on great work experience in areas of advice, advocacy, social work and homelessness, research, consumer relations and many others. We offer them training, on-going support and, after minimum time commitment, valuable references.

If you think you have experience, skills and knowledge to share with other Easter European migrants who need our support, or you just want to meet new friends and give something back, please contact us!

What happens now?

Firstly we would like to most sincerely thank you for volunteering to help us and as you will no doubt be wondering what happens now, the following information will hopefully clear that subject up for you.

STEP 1

We will study your application and see which part of the UK you live in.

STEP 2

If there are other volunteers in your area we will inform you so that, if you wish, you can make contact with them.

STEP3

Depending on where you live, we may have current cases near you and if this is the case then we will make contact with you in order to discuss if your particular talents/abilities or available hours would help to solve the case in question.

STEP 4

If we feel you could help we will speak to the client with the problem and ask them if they are happy to meet with you and discuss their problem.

STEP 5

Although Polish people form the majority of the East European community in Britain there are thousands of East European migrants who are not Polish and if you are one of those people then we are particularly interested to discuss with you a list of ways that you might be able to assist us. Never underestimate the possible worth to others of  information and knowledge you hold which you may have thought was unimportant. Please do not be shy to make contact with us.

STEP 6

Lastly, to all the people who volunteer, we will be happy to send you our Newsletter and will be very interested to hear any ideas you may have concerning subjects worth further investigation and being written about in the appropriate section of our website. Lighthouse is an information gatherer and provider. Our readers and volunteers are our eyes and ears on the real life that you are experiencing. Most of it will be fine and, hopefully happy, but by you bringing to light the problem areas maybe, with the help of our network, those problems could be solved. You will not know until you try.

What are the benefits?

People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experiences and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, what unites them all is that they find it both challenging and rewarding.
